    Key Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Ingredients to make blackberry strawberry banana smoothie

Frozen berries: Any type of frozen fruit can be used but for this specific recipe, you want to use frozen, sliced strawberries and frozen blackberries. In a pinch, you can use fresh fruit. However, I strongly recommend freezing the fruit for at least an hour before blending. This is essential to achieve the creamy, frosty smoothie texture.

Frozen bananas: Again, you want to use frozen fruit. Frozen bananas help contribute a frosty thick texture to the smoothie. Don't forget to slice the banana before freezing so you don't end up with an ice log! Some people opt to blend frozen sliced bananas alone, and enjoy it as a healthy ice cream or "nice cream"!

Pasteurized Greek yogurt: Using Greek yogurt adds a creamy tanginess to the smoothie which enhances the overall flavor. You can use any kind of yogurt, but I absolutely recommend Greek yogurt, especially to pregnant women. Greek yogurt has far higher protein content and thus nutritional value.

Complete list of ingredients and amounts is located on the recipe card below.

    Banana Strawberry Blackberry Smoothie Benefits

Strawberries and blackberries: Strawberries specifically are a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports baby’s growth and enhances iron absorption. Blackberries are an excellent source of fiber, folate, and vitamin C, supplying 21 mg of vitamin C in 100g of fruit.

Berries are nutrient-dense complex carbohydrates and are actually one of the best fruits that a pregnant woman can eat! Complex carbohydrates supply pregnant mama with energy and easily pass through the placenta to provide nourishment to the growing baby.

Greek yogurt: Generally, pasteurized greek yogurt has twice the protein content of regular yogurt. Adequate protein intake is crucial during pregnancy because it facilitates the increasing blood supply and growth of both maternal and fetal tissues.

Importantly, Greek yogurt is also a good source of calcium, which keeps the pregnant woman’s bones strong and is essential for growth of baby’s skeleton.

    Make Ahead & Storage

    • Make Ahead: I don’t recommend making this smoothie ahead of time because the texture starts to become more watery and liquid. Once blended, you want to serve this smoothie immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • Slice fresh bananas and store them in the freezer for easy retrieval whenever the desire to make a smoothie strikes!
    • If you don’t have dried dates on hand, feel free to replace with a tablespoon of maple syrup.
    • You can omit the date entirely but the earthy, natural sweetness of the date does counteract the slight tartness of the Greek yogurt.
    • When fresh blackberries and strawberries are in season, these fruits can be obtained at a cheaper price. Buy extra fruit, slice, and freeze for later use in smoothies!

    Recipe Notes

For a strawberry blackberry smoothie with no banana, omit the bananas. Replace the bananas with one additional cup of frozen fruit plus an extra dried date in order to compensate for the loss in sweetness.

    Variations

    • For a frozen banana and blackberry smoothie without yogurt, omit the Greek yogurt and replace with extra milk. Be aware that this will alter the nutritional content of the smoothie by reducing the protein content.
    • If you are looking for higher protein content, add a tablespoon of unsweetened peanut butter just before blending. The resulting strawberry blackberry banana smoothie will have an even richer taste plus an extra punch of protein! If you are considering adding protein powder, consult with your healthcare professional prior to use.

    FAQS

How much sugar does a strawberry banana smoothie have?

One serving of this smoothie recipe has 22g of sugar.

What is the best way to make a strawberry and banana smoothie without yogurt?

To make this smoothie without yogurt, replace the yogurt with additional milk (or plant-based milk), in the same proportion. The resulting smoothie texture will be a bit thinner but equally delicious. If desired, you can also replace the yogurt with a tablespoon of unsweetened nut butter, such as peanut butter.

What’s a good liquid to use in a frozen berry smoothie?

Milk is generally a good option as it lends creaminess and richness to the smoothie. If you are vegan, plant-based milks such as oat milk or almond milk are great options!
